"Try It" Tool for Database View

The "Try It" Tool for Database View is a practical enhancement to the out-of-the-box "Try It" Related Links UI Action in ServiceNow. If you work with Database Views and want a smoother, more efficient way to test and tweak them, this tool is designed with you in mind. You'll wonder how you lived without it!

Here’s everything you need to know about it:

What It Does

Unlike the standard "Try It" feature, which validates your Database View and opens it in the current window, this custom version takes a simpler, more user-friendly approach:

  • Opens in a New Tab/Window: Instead of redirecting your current window (and interrupting your workflow), it opens the List View in a separate tab or window. You can keep editing the view in the original tab and just refresh the new one to see your changes.

  • Warns About Unsaved Changes: If you’ve made tweaks to the view but haven’t saved them, a handy pop-up warns you.

  • Skips Validation: It doesn’t check the view’s validity upfront—ServiceNow will handle any validation in the background. This lets you quickly see your view in action without delays.

How It Works

You’ll find this tool right where you’d expect it—in the "Related Links" section of your Database View form, alongside options like "Show Table" or "Advanced view." There’s also a Try It (ASI) button at the top of the form for quick access. Here’s the flow:

  1. Click Try It (ASI).

  1. If there are unsaved changes, a dialog pops up to warn you. Choose "OK" to open the view in a new tab/window, or "Cancel" to go back and save your work.

  1. Now, with a new separate tab/window open, you can continue tweaking the view in the original tab while refreshing and continually testing it in the new one.

Why It’s Awesome

This tool shines by making your workday smoother and less error-prone:

  • Stay in Control: No more losing your place because the current window redirected. Edit in one tab, test in another—it’s that simple.

  • Faster Feedback: Skip the validation step and jump straight to seeing your view. Perfect for experimenting or quick adjustments.

  • Avoid Mistakes: The unsaved changes warning is a lifesaver, keeping you from testing an outdated version by accident.

Real-Life Example

Imagine you’re setting up a Database View called "internal_users" to show internal users with a specific plugin installed. You’re tweaking filters and fields in the form, and you want to see how it looks.

With the Out-of-the-Box "Try It," you’d validate and redirect, losing your edits if you forgot to save. With this tool, you click Try It (ASI),  it opens in a new tab, and—if you’ve got unsaved tweaks—a warning pops up. You save (or not), then refresh the new tab to see your changes live. No fuss, no lost work.

Fits Right In

This isn’t some clunky add-on—it’s built to feel native to ServiceNow. Whether you’re a seasoned admin or just getting started with Database Views, it slots into your routine without a hitch. The interface stays familiar, and the functionality just makes sense.

In short, the "Try It" Tool for Database View is a small tweak with big impact. It’s all about saving you time, keeping your workflow uninterrupted, and giving you peace of mind with that unsaved changes warning. Next time you’re building or testing a view, give it a spin—you’ll see why it’s a game-changer!
